Mission Leadership Seminar - A Pentecost Experience
A dear friend texted me this scripture in anticipation of saying good-bye to our family...
"...proclaim unto the world...for the space of a season...verily, this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you." - D&C 71:2-3
It brought me great comfort. This call is a gift, and it is only for a season.
We packed our luggage into the truck and took it with us to Gary's mom's home to stay with her as we participated in our online Mission Leader Seminar. We had our hopes up that we would be able to return to the Provo MTC for the event, but the spirit we felt as we participated via zoom in all the sessions almost made us forget we weren't there in person.
As one friend who was in attendance described it, "It was a time of Pentecost. I felt like I’d been in the temple for three days."
We first heard from our dear prophet, as well as the rest of the First Presidency and most of the Quorum of the 12. It felt richer to me than General Conference, where they are speaking to a worldwide church audience. For three days they spoke just to us, the mission leaders leaving to serve. They were powerful and personal. One of my main take-aways was that one of our primary responsibilities is to teach and nurture our missionaries on their own personal journeys of conversion. We are building lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ, not just missionaries for 18 months or 2 years.
I quote Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Please teach the words of Christ to your missionaries. Stand in front of them with your scriptures in your hands and let them see where you find your answers and inspiration. One day you won’t be standing there and they will still see your strength. Make your conviction so obvious that no opposition they face in their futures will sink in. Your teachings to them will go on and on and on for generations as you leave your imprint on these souls.”
